Bundled palm-leaf pages of the Basava Puranam, densely written in Telugu script
Palm-leaf manuscript of the Andhra Mahabhagavatham with its handwritten Telugu label

Round letters, from palm leaves.

For centuries Telugu was scratched into dried palm leaves with an iron stylus. A long straight stroke could split a leaf along its grain, which is the usual explanation for why the script curls. Padam means word, పదం, and it keeps that curl on every key.

    How it types

    nenu

First, spell it in English letters.

    నేను
    నెనునేనునేనే

Then Padam writes it in Telugu.

    నేను బాగున్నాను
    బాగున్నబాగున్నానుబాగు

    Space takes the best guess.

    నేను బాగున్నాను. మీరు?
    మీకుమీరుమీ

Words you pick come first next time.

    Questions, answered.

    Is Padam free?

Yes. Padam is free. Ads appear only inside the Padam app, where you set it up and pick colours, and never inside the keyboard while you type.

    Does it need the internet?

No. The keyboard and its word list live on your phone, so it types the same on a plane. The Padam app uses the internet only to show ads.

Why does Android warn me when I turn it on?

Android shows that message for every keyboard you add, because any keyboard could see what you type. Padam keeps what you type on your phone and never sends it anywhere.

    Can I type English too?

Tap తె to switch to English and EN to switch back. Password, email and web-address boxes use English letters automatically.

    How do I type ట, డ or ణ?

    Use a capital: T ట, D డ, N ణ, L ళ, Sh ష, E ఏ, O ఓ. Or type in lowercase and tap the right word in the suggestions.

How do I switch it on?

Open Padam, tap Turn on Padam and switch it on in the list, then tap Choose Padam. Hold the space bar any time to change keyboard.

    Type Telugu in every app.
